The Heroes of Jite

India

Having visited the incredibly interesting Shiva Temple at Umbardi with its staggering collection of Hero and Sati stones, I became aware of site just a short distance away that is also home to some memorial stones, although this time a far more modest number.

Jite (also known as Jita) is 19km north-east of Mangaon, and 2km south of the aforementioned village of Umbardi. Lined up in the courtyard of a modern Hanuman temple are a handful of hero stones, and a single sati stone.

Just as we saw at Umbardi, these stones have probably been displaced over the centuries from their original location, as the landscape is reshaped for farming or construction of new buildings/roads. They were probably moved to this temple location for safekeeping. Their condition is not great either, with two of the hero stones having been previously broken along with a few that are now just fragmentary. These memorial stones are believed to date from the 12th – 13th century CE.
