Delhi’s ancient city boasts a plethora of architectural marvels, and among these gems is the Shri Digambar Jain Meru Mandir, hidden deep inside the narrow maze of alleys in Shahjahanabad. Constructed in 1845 by the visionary Lala Mehar Chand Jain, this temple is a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of the old city. It’s located almost directly opposite the equally impressive Shri Digambar Jain Naya Mandir, a visit to this temple is not to be missed either. The journey into this architectural marvel begins through a beautifully carved buff-colored sandstone gateway with painted wooden doors. While the temple’s outer facade may appear somewhat unassuming, it conceals a breathtaking interior that defies expectations.
At the heart of Jainism lies the significance of Mount Meru, a sacred cosmic mountain revered as the center of the Jain universe. This colossal mountain is symbolic of spiritual ascension, cosmic harmony, and the journey towards enlightenment. In Jain cosmology, Mount Meru is surrounded by various realms, each representing distinct levels of existence and spiritual progression. The Shri Digambar Jain Meru Temple stands as a visual representation of Nandishvara Dvipa, the eighth island continent in Jain cosmology.
The main shrine, located on the first floor, welcomes visitors with marble fluted columns and intricate paintings adorning the walls and ceilings. The entire space is a symphony of vibrant colors set against the soothing white of the marble, creating a sense of surprise and wonderment for visitors.
It is believed some of the temple’s idols date back to 1491 CE. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has restored the interiors although it is unprotected and continues to be a living monument. These are quite possibly the best preserved paintings in Old Delhi.
As you step into the sacred precincts of the temple, you embark on a visual journey that transcends the boundaries of time. The temple not only stands as a testament to architectural finesse but also serves as a spiritual beacon, inviting all to explore the depths of Jain cosmology and the profound symbolism encapsulated within Mount Meru. It is a place where history, spirituality, and art converge, offering a unique experience that resonates with both devotees and admirers of cultural heritage alike.
